Catherine Called Birdy

Lena Dunham’s adaptation of the beloved children’s novel is a great coming-of-age story. Ramsey plays Birdy, a young girl whose father (Scott) is trying to marry her to save the family. Birdy is determined to derail her father’s plans. The movie succeeds because Dunham complicates the book’s portrayals of Birdy and her father, neither heroes nor villains. On a Saturday afternoon, I put Catherine Called Birdy on to enjoy while I played games and did housework. I was captivated for 108 minutes.

The Book Clubs

Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen star as a group of best friends who have been a part of a long-standing book club in this delightful and raunchy romantic comedy written and directed by Adam Shankman. Even though they have achieved a lot professionally, they are all going through difficult times in their personal lives and relationships. When one chooses Fifty Shades of Grey as the next book they’ll read together, it opens up the group with a lovely story about personal acceptance and coming to terms with oneself, regardless of what stage of life one may find themselves in.

Free Guy

Is the movie “Free Guy” an outstanding example of cinematic artistry? Never in a million years. Aside from the fact that it is technically an “original film,” the movie’s premise is a strange mash-up of The Truman Show with Fortnite, PUBG, and GTA Online. Is it an enjoyable video game comedy that features strong performances from Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, and Taika Waititi and which stays more or less self-contained in its universe before reaching its climax in an explosion of indulgent Easter egg fan service? Yeah. Is it to your liking? No, but it is fun to watch and to entertain to watch, and for those two reasons alone, it is head and shoulders above the majority of other video game comedies in its genre.

Always Be My Maybe

The hilarious and endearing Always Be My Maybe exceeds all rom-com expectations. The pair (who wrote the script with Michael Golamco) play childhood friends who lose touch after an impulsive teenage romance ends badly. After his mother’s tragic death, Park’s Marcus stays home. He works for his father’s blue-collar business, while Wong’s Sasha becomes a celebrity chef. Marcus and Sasha must support each other’s careers instead of compromising to be together. Nahnatchka Khan’s stylish film moves at a pleasant comedic pace, and there’s a killer cameo you won’t want spoiled.

The movies are funny and heartwarming, which makes them popular with viewers. They are also well-made, which ensures that they remain popular over time.
